چکیده

We quantify the angular distribution of radio sources in the NVSS by measuring the two-point angular correlation function w(θ). By careful consideration of the resolution of radio galaxies into multiple components, we are able to determine both the galaxy angular clustering and the size distribution of giant radio galaxies. The slope of the correlation function for radio galaxies agrees with that for other classes of galaxy, γ = 1.8, with a 3D correlation length r0 ∼ 6 h −1 Mpc (under certain assumptions). Calibration problems in the survey prevent clustering analysis below S1.4GHz = 10 mJy. About 7 per cent of radio galaxies are resolved by NVSS into multiple components, with a power-law size distribution. Our work calls into question previous analyses and interpretations of w(θ) from radio surveys.

Quantifying angular clustering in wide-area radio surveys

We quantify the angular clustering of radio galaxies in the NVSS and FIRST surveys using the two-point correlation function and the moments of counts-incells – both important points of comparison with theory. These investigations consistently demonstrate that the slope of the correlation function for radio galaxies agrees with that for optically-selected galaxies, γ ≈ 1.8. We describe how to di...

A new sample of large angular size radio galaxies I . The radio data

We present a new sample of 84 large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Radio sources with declination above +60 • , total flux density greater than 100 mJy at 1.4 GHz and angular size larger than 4 ′ have been selected and observed with the VLA at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz. The radio observations attempt to confirm the large angular size sources and to isolate the core emi...

A sample of radio-loud AGN in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

A sample of 2712 radio–luminous galaxies is defined from the second data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) by cross–comparing the main spectroscopic galaxy sample with two radio surveys: the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimetres (FIRST) survey. The comparison is carried out in a multi– stage process and makes optimal use of both radi...

The angular power spectrum of NVSS radio galaxies

We measure the angular power spectrum Cl of radio galaxies in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) using two independent methods: direct spherical harmonic analysis and maximum likelihood estimation. The results are consistent and can be understood using models for the spatial matter power spectrum and for the redshift distribution of radio galaxies at mJy flux-density levels. A good fit to the angul...

Restarting activity in the giant radio galaxy J1835+620

We present radio and optical observations of the peculiar radio galaxy J1835+620, a member of a new sample of large angular size radio galaxies selected from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey. Its optical counterpart is in a group of at least three galaxies and shows strong, narrow emission lines which allow us to measure its redshift as z = 0.518. The derived cosmological distance places J1835+620 among...
